When you have a well mannered pup errands are enjoyable and training is fun. Shiloh and I went to two stores today and she was great! We used the second store for more practice with a shopping cart. She didn’t mind it at all. Shiloh is observant of the environment. She got a number of pets and even got to see some children. If you want to do the same, it does take time and work. Send me a message and let’s get you and your pup started.

I was asked to be a guest on a podcast and here you can listen to a bit about my transition to Full time dog trainer. Transitional strategy for dog biz peeps. This can look like... Going from a dog walker to a dog trainer Dog boarding to board and trains Adventure dog activities to dog training services Ditching your day job to be an entrepreneur in the biz of dogs Or like, our girl here, Heather, who went from full-time career educator and part-time petsitter to full-blown badass dog trainer. Heather made the transition twice. Successfully. Mind. Freaking. BLOWN. Here's the real talk, though. We're going, to be honest. Many dog pros get stuck in this limbo when attempting the transition, no matter what type of business they're shifting into. That's WHY, if you're shifting dog business gears, you need a transitional strategy. Or you'll end up stuck between two dog businesses with doing more, burning more mental and physical energy, and end up saying, "eff this." Listen to Heather's journey on how she beat the odds and did it twice, at the same time, in the same year. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3jOnB3XV8NSeKmtSsGARsc...

We all hope our pups will be well behaved when we take them away from the house. How do we ensure this will happen though? By taking trips to different locations and working on the basic skills we've taught them. Adding distractions in a way to proof and sure up your training. Taking your training from inside the house to the backyard is one step, move to the front yard, then going to a new location with some distractions helps. I have taken pups on walks to different parks and little do they realize we are training. I pick a few things to work on each time. Sit, walk, touch, up, down and wait. The pup is usually super excited for the new location so I give them permission to sniff first then I'll work on the other skills and that is where and when I get some great pictures. Whenever we move our pups to new locations we need to give them a few minutes to adjust and then we can move into proofing or teaching depending on our goal. All of the basic skills they are taught should be able to be accomplished with distractions and change of locations.

I am sure you are looking forward to the 4th of July because many of us think of this as the kickoff to summer. On that hand it's exciting especially since we wouldn't do much last year. On the other hand you are dreading this weekend and possibly the next few weeks/months as people will be setting off fireworks and you know your furkids are going to be miserable. Here are some helpful tips and things to do now to get yourself and your pup ready for the coming days. If you want help having a calm pup all the time get in touch with me and I will help you and your pup.

As a dog walker I always checked the temps and watched for any signs that the dog was uncomfortable. DON'T risk walking your dog on the sidewalk or asphalt. Use the grass even if you think your neighbors will mind it will save your pup from burnt paws. I also keep walks and play short in the heat outside. A kiddie pool is a good idea but the best idea is to spend less time outside during the highest heat temps. I know you're thinking what do I do instead. Short training sessions, play fetch inside with toys or a ball, use a puzzle toy for meals and/or plan a short walk in the morning or late evening after the sun goes down a bit.
